Trailer

The Dinner Scene

One of the trickiest scenes to edit in the entire film. I talk about why in this podcast for The Next Best Picture

The scene was so overwhelming to us that we put off tackling it until the very end of the process.

The argument happening at the table is one quite alien to most Americans. We had to help American audiences understand the scene, but the ideas being discussed were so universally understood in Chinese culture that the characters would not realistically go into detail about why they were saying the things they were saying. It was an incredibly delicate balancing act to make the scene powerful for two different audiences with very different cultural backgrounds.
